Anuj Nayyar, awarded with India's second highest gallantry award, was born on 28 August 1975 in Delhi. He was also known as Captain Anuj Nayyar. He had been a Jat officer in the Indian Army. Anuj Nayyar was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra in 1991 for his bravery in the Kargil War. He had great loyalty towards his country. Anuj Nayyar ji worked in the army from 1997 to 1999. And his rank was that of captain. He had performed brilliantly in war like Kargil and Operation Vijay.

Anuj Nayyer biography

Early years and career-  

Anuj Nayyar was born on 28 August 1975. His entire childhood was spent in Delhi only. Anuj's father's name was Satish Kumar Nayyar and he used to work on the post of visiting professor in Delhi School of Economics. Nine's mother's name was Meena Nayyar and she also worked in the South Campus library of Delhi University. Anuj used to do well in his studies as well as in sports.

Anuj completed his school education from Army Public School Dhaula Kuua and completed his graduation from National Defense Academy, Cuttack. Anuj had received the commission in 17th
Bataliya Jat Regiment from the Indian Military Academy in 1997.

Kargil War:-

In 1999, the Indian Army began mobilizing its forces to drive out Pakistani infiltrators from the Kargil area of Jammu and Kashmir. One of them was 17 Jat Battalion. Anuj's first mission was to secure a peak inside the Pimple complex on the western slope of a small 4875 in the Mushkoh valley.

For this reason, securing Point 4875 was the most important and first priority for the Indian Army. Talking about the specialty of this peak, it was at an altitude of about 15,990 feet above sea level. And the slope was very steep. It was such a peak that it was almost impossible to capture it without air support. Anuj Nayyar decided to secure this dangerous little one on 6th July without air support.

Anuj Nayyar's company commander was injured in the Sikoyke attack. And the responsibility of handling the company was handed over to Anuj Nayyar. As soon as Anuj Nayyar took command of the company in a fierce battle, the lead section came to know that there are 3 to 4 enemy bunkers in front. On getting this news, Anuj fired the rocket launcher and also threw a grenade. In which the bunkers of the enemy were destroyed. Anuj kept moving forward in the environment of shelling and heavy firing. In which 7 soldiers were involved with him. who destroyed 2 more enemy bunkers

In this fierce battle, Anuj Nayyar killed Pakistani soldiers. Simultaneously destroyed 3 medium machine gun bunkers. After this the company proceeded to destroy the last one but a tenth RPG directly hit Anuj in which Anuj Nayyar was martyred. Pimple II was captured on 8 July. But for this Anuj had to make the supreme sacrifice


In this battle, 46 soldiers of the Pakistan Army were killed by the Indian Army. In which regular members, unknown members, paramilitary personnel and terrorists were included. Eleven soldiers of the Indian Army were martyred along with Captain Anuj Nayyar. It was also easiest to redo the hill point protecting the Pimple Complex. And finally the Pakistani army was forced to retreat across the Line of Control.

Recognition and Legacy

Captain Anuj Nayyar was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his gallantry.

Anuj's father Satish Kumar Nayyar was allotted a gas station in Delhi by the Government of India in recognition of his son's services. Sepoy Tejbir Singh, who worked with Anuj, named his son Anuj in honor of Anuj.

A road in Delhi's Janakpuri area was named "Captain Anuj Nayyar Marg".
